Water Yam is a kind of artist’s book by George Brecht. It was published for the first time in 1963 and came in a box designed by Fluxus impresario George Maciunas. The box contains a large number of cards of various sizes that have so-called event scores–instructions for everyday actions–printed on them. These events are open-ended: that is, it is not stipulated by whom, when, where and how they are to be performed, or whether they exist only in the imagination. The musical scores in Water Yam include Solo for Violin, Viola, Cello or Contrabass, whose notation consists of a single word, polishing, and the famous Drip Music: a source of dripping water and an empty container are arranged in such a way that the water falls into the container. Irrespective of the actual interpretation given to these instructions, the central meaning of the event is tied to Brecht’s conviction that every moment in life is musical and that every object can potentially be used as a musical instrument.
